Interview: Mitch Thompson Downhill Pro Skateboarder
Mitch Thompson joins the Fulkit Wall Of Fame! While visiting Europe for the World Skate Games, we took the opportunity to get to know Mitch a little better and ask him a few questions. Here is his interview portrait:
Pierre: Hi Mitch, can you introduce yourself for those who don't know you yet?
Mitch: Hello, my name is Mitch Thompson, also known as Mitty. I was born in 1997 and I'm originally from Mt Panorama in Australia, where I still live.
Pierre: How did you start longboarding?
Mitch: In 2012, as I was about to attend a freestyle scooter and BMX event, I accidentally came across a downhill longboard competition (Newton's Nation). I was really impressed by what I discovered, and a few months later, I started downhill longboarding.
Pierre: What do you like most about longboarding?
Mitch: The competition and the friendships are what motivate me the most. I love the competitive aspect and pushing myself beyond my limits. Outside of racing, I really enjoy discovering new roads and traveling with friends. I like speed and steep roads. In downhill longboarding, there's something unique that unites us, no matter who you are or what you do in life.
Pierre: Can you tell us a bit more about your race results?
Mitch: I’m starting to build up quite a good list…
The first international podium was in 2016, with a 3rd place in Killington (World Cup event).
Australian Champion in 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020.
1st place in the Newton's Nation World Cup in 2019 (3rd place in 2017).
Oceania Champion in 2017.
1st place in the Vulcan Race in 2017.
1st place in the Red Bull Sidewinder in 2017.
Track record holder at Seaside and La Virgen in 2019.
3rd place at the Teolo World Cup in 2017, 3rd place at the Korea World Cup in 2017, ...
Pierre: Among all your titles, your victory at the Newton’s Nation World Cup particularly impresses me. Having participated there twice myself, I know that track is totally out of the ordinary. Can you tell us more about it?
Mitch: Yes, it's true that this victory at Newton’s Nation was particularly special to me. Firstly, because it’s my home spot; I grew up and live at the foot of that road. It’s where I discovered downhill longboarding. It’s also a very fast and challenging track. Many consider it among the scariest in the entire world circuit. It speeds up very quickly, there are high-risk sections, and the crashes are generally very violent. One mistake can be very costly.
Pierre: Regarding your setup, what equipment do you use?
Mitch: I ride my Pantheon pro model board, which is a fairly short board (32.12”) with a bullet shape and W concave. For trucks, I use Valkyrie MK 3.5 DH in 115-125mm, and for wheels, I use my pro model 88 Wheels Big Mitty 82mm. The whole setup creates a board that is both very stable and responsive, with great grip, which fits perfectly with racing conditions.
Pierre: A word about your sponsors?
Mitch: Pantheon for the board, Valkyrie for the trucks, and 88 Wheels for the wheels, Get that Skate clothing. I’m in charge of the development of the 88 Wheels downhill section.
Pierre: Thank you, Mitch, it was a pleasure talking to you and meeting you here in France at the Freeride des Tourettes. All the best!
