Test: Trucks Longboard Caliber III

Our friend and blogger Punkaroulettes (see Longboardskate.blogspot ) put the new Caliber III through its paces. After a few months of intensive riding, here are Punky's impressions...

For this 3rd version CALIBER diversifies by proposing in addition to widths 9" & 10" inches (158mm and 184mm) and of the angles of base to 44° or 50°, the possibility of choosing the behavior of your trucks with the development of 2 types of hangers: with or without 5mm rake. The Caliber V1 and V2 were only available without rake.

The story behind trucks with inverted geometry...

PARIS TRUCKS CO. created in 2006 by Joey Pulsifer, is rapidly taking over from the legendary RANDAL, which has been the only one of its kind since its creation in 1975. With a more meticulous moulding and finish, better quality tyres, more predictable handling and a well-honed marketing campaign, PARIS TRUCKS quickly became the untouchable leader.

CALIBER debuts in 2010 with a reputation for trucks (who hasn't folded their PARIS V1?) and a more stable behaviour (no rake). PARIS rectified the situation on their 2nd version with a thicker hanger, while CALIBER hit back with a more polished V2 available in a number of bright, shimmering colours. CALIBER is also going all out in the advertising department, with ads full of sexist clichés.

Caliber III Trucks: First impressions

For these CALIBER V3s, the brand has slightly redesigned the hanger to make it stronger and has done a great job of optimising the tread pattern, which for me was the weak point of the previous versions.

The 90A tyres are designed and produced by VENOM especially for these models. trucks. The plug barrel on the deck side is inserted into the hanger to limit unwanted lateral movement, in the same way as an insert or spherical bearing (The same type of rubber can be found on the RANDAL 3).

Another weak point has been rectified: the basic plastic pivot cup, which quickly became loose, has been replaced by a new, more durable version in 96A.

Tall barrel tyres can be fitted to 44° tyres without changing the geometry of the tyres. truckssimply by removing the red shim. This will make it easier to tilt this version, which has less rotation than the 50°.

Caliber III: Test in action...

I opted for a set of CALIBER III 158mm 50° avec rake /44° sans rake.

I'm looking for manoeuvrability, a responsive front end and a softer, more forgiving rear end. I mounted it on my 120cm HACKBRETT Wasser without any pads and some wheels SEISMIC Alpha 75.5mm 76A.

First of all, I'm impressed by the clearance of the whole thing. wheels are big and even when turning hard there's no "cock mould" as Boris would say.

The trucks turn easily, so this one-metre-twenty liner is much more manoeuvrable than it looks. There's no wobble or hard spots in the rubber, the movement is perfectly linear. The trucks The carving doesn't suffer from any indelicate movements. The '8' movement is transferred from the shoulders to the deck without any loss. A bit like the trucks à bearing spherical in the hanger but without the discomfort of metal parts. The bushings announced in 90A seemed on paper a little too hard for cruising. In use, there's no need to change them. truck The Barrel/Cone combination on the front compressed comfortably under my 70kg weight.

On descents, the pleasant surprise continued, and a quick turn of the key was all it took to firm them up and keep them up to speed without any problem. Experience to be confirmed on deck The Wasser and its 91.4cm centre-to-centre distance probably play a role in stability at high speeds. The good feeling is confirmed when gliding. With trucks Progressive and comfortable as they are, they're bound to glide along nicely. It's nothing exceptional, but there are no traps, and the glide is easy to find and easy to control. It's a lot of fun and gives you the confidence to go faster on the next run, to lick the inside of the turn after a few powerful, serene carves...

Up until now, I've been more of a 'Team PARIS' rider. for their playfulness and turnability, these CALIBER 3rd of the name have reconciled me with the brand. I'd driven the first 2 versions, so I was able to assess the improvements made to this one. Apart from the new cup pivot, which could be adjusted for greater durability, all the changes made to this series make this CALIBER III one of the best in the world. trucks reference among trucks with inverted geometry.

I particularly like the fact that you can mix and match your set of trucks according to our deck and preferences: width, angle, rake, rubber size. At a time when everything is standardised / shared to reduce prices... Let us choose our trucks for god's sake!!!
