Witch skateboard to use in a pumptrack?
Do you want to get into pumptrack skateboarding, but you don't know which board to choose? This article is here to guide you…
First of all do you know what a pumptrack is? Nope ?? Come on, we're cool and we'll explain to you... A pumptrack is a course of bitumen bumps similar to BMX tracks. In skateboarding, we chain the loops by gaining speed by pumping movement. It's super fun, it can be practiced with friends or family, it's learned quickly, you rarely fall, it works your thighs and your breath,... In short, it's a discipline worth its weight in peanuts!
For gear, skateboard, cruiser, longboard or surfskate may be suitable.
The board…
The first imperative in choosing the board is to opt for a board that is not lowered, otherwise the board will rub on the bumps
In terms of board dimensions, it will be preferable to stay in a format that is not too long (Max 35”), but with sufficient width (at least 8.5”) to maintain good comfort underfoot. Kick tail and nose tails are not essential, but remain appreciable to have good support. The wheelbase can vary between 15” and 22” keeping in mind that a reduced spacing between the trucks will make it possible to complete tighter turns with greater ease. Wide cruisers, old school boards, and downhill longboards are all boards suitable for pumptrack
Trucks…
The choice of trucks will depend on the type and width of the board you use. For agility, trucks under 170mm are recommended.
Wheels…
The wheels for pumptrack depend on the type of board used.
In skateboarding, wider and softer wheels diameter 55mm to 60mm will maintain good speed and grip. Ex: Bones Rough Riders ATF 59mm
For cruisers, soft wheels with a diameter of 60mm to 65mm will be a very good choice. Ex: Hawgs Fatty
As for longboards, wheels around 70mm, square lips, and hardness between 78A and 83a will allow you to easily keep up the speed with a minimum of effort. Example wheels: Orangatang 4 President, Cinetic Crop 70
Some examples of popular pumptrack boards: Landyachtz Tugboat, Koad Flachan, Powell Peralta Vallely, Arbor Shakedown 34
