Offering a Skateboard: How to Choose?
Would you like to give a skateboard but don't know where to start? Don't worry, we'll explain all the key points for a successful gift...
What would be the use of the skateboard?
If the goal is to skate in a skatepark and/or explore freestyle tricks, a skateboard is what you need, and this is where you'll find good advice.
If the skateboard is intended for city cruising, choosing a cruiser skateboard would be more appropriate. In this case, we invite you to consult our Longboard Buyer's guide.
If you're into dancing, downhill, surfskating, pump tracking, or even slalom with your skateboard, this time we recommend opting for a longboard. You can find more advice in our Longboard Buyer's Guide.
Un skateboard pour qui?
Depending on the size of the person you want to gift a skateboard to, it is important to choose a skateboard of appropriate length and width.
For a child, one would generally choose a skateboard that is less than 7.75" wide, but this is not the only criterion to consider. For children, having a reduced spacing between the trucks is also important because it allows them to naturally place their feet above the trucks without spreading their legs too far apart. Brands like Tricks, Aloiki, Santa Cruz, and Creature all offer complete skateboards that are suitable for children.
Note: We have a crush on the Santa Cruz Kids range, which has the advantage of combining reduced truck spacing, suitable length, reassuring width, and components such as trucks and wheels adapted to the weight of younger riders.
For teenagers, skateboards width 7.75" to 8" are a beast. keep in mind that narrower decks are more agile, however, a wider boards would be more stable
For adults, skateboard decks ranging from 8" to 8.25" will meet the expectations of the majority. If the primary use is for bowl skating, then a width between 8.25" and 9" will provide added comfort and stability.
What are the differences between skate brands and models?
The main difference between skateboard brands and lines often lies in the quality of materials and components. High-end skateboards are typically assembled with higher-quality trucks, bearings, and wheels, as well as harder and more durable wood.
Most complete skateboards made by major brands are designed for beginner and intermediate skaters. For more experienced skaters, custom-set skateboards allow the selection of more robust and precise components. We also have some complete setups assembled by us (indicated as 'pack' on the product sheet), specifically tailored for pros.
There are different types of concaves. If you don't have specific instructions from the person you want to give the skateboard to, the Medium concave will be the most versatile.
